On July 3rd , 2003 at its 27th session, the World Heritage Committee - UNESCO approved Vietnam's submission to recognize Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park as a World Heritage Site on criteria (viii) - exceptional global value in geomorphology. Once again, on July 3rd 2015, members of the World Heritage Committee agreed to add criterion (ix) - outstanding examples representing significant on-going ecological and biological processes in the evolution and development of terrestrial ecosystems and Criterion (x) contain the most important and significant natural habitats for in-situ conservation of biological diversity, the area of Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park expanded to 123,326ha compared to the first time was 85,754ha.
To be honored as a World Heritage Site is not only an important milestone in recognition of its exceptional global values but also an assessment of efforts in preserving intact heritage values. On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park recognized as a World Natural Heritage by UNESCO, many events will be organized by Quang Binh People's Committee, including:
Online contest “Learn about conservation and promotion of World Natural Heritage values Phong Nha – Ke – Bang National Park” will be held from June 14-30, 2023. Performing arts program “Ao Dai – Returning to Quang Binh Heritage Region” will take place on June 30, 2023, in Phong Nha Town, Bo Trach District.
Especially, from June 30 to July 1, there will be an international conference "Promoting the values of Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park World Heritage in the trend of integration and sustainable development". There are participants from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, central and local agencies, domestic and international scientists.
